Wiki-Wiki what
What's a wiki? My husband thought it was a young wookie, but he's weird. A wiki is a user generated site where anyone can edit and post anything, anytime. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, right? But it's not. Because when people post on the most popular site, Wikipedia.org, there are thousands of other people who are just as passionate about the subject as the people who might vandalize or put false information on the page. Wikipedia makes the user the editor, so there are more guardians of the gateway of information, making points of failure harder to slip through the cracks. How could you use a wiki in your classroom, and is it appropriate for younger students such as second graders?

When I asked Adam if he had set up wikis for his clients or if he knew if any used them he said something lame about a Wookie too! Those two are so alike sometimes that it is scary!!!
ReplyDeleteSarah I just found a wiki called wikijunior. The students are able to write and edit books. There seemed to be lots of good ideas and seemed fairly simple for younger students to use. This may give you ideas for your classroom.
ReplyDeleteI think second graders could use it in the classroom. It would take alot of guidance and modeling at first, but once they were able to use it on a regular basis, they could get the hang of it.
ReplyDeleteIt would be cool to set it up with things in it already typed and have them edit it for information. For example... You could type in the sentence "George Washington lived in a log cabin." and have them edit the information. Just a thought but a great way for students to edit content information and add to what they see. :)
ReplyDeleteI started a wiki with my students yesterday. I will let you know how they do with it.
